Sonja Larsson b. 1955
Sonja Larsson's large-scale paintings may be referred to as minimalistic, yet the time-consuming working process is characterized by a series of decisions based on intuition and feeling. The subtle expression of Sonja Larsson is guided by a combination of rules and a considerable element of surprise. Larsson is working towards a rhythm, created through layers and layers of paint meticulously applied with the help of masking tape. Each layer of paint adds complexity, and allows the artist to pursue an inner logic. Larsson challenges the viewer to spend time in front of her paintings, an experience similar to listening to a musical piece from beginning to end. The physical experience of colour and rhythm gradually grows during the process of viewing, allowing the painting to occupy both time and space.
Sonja Larsson (b. 1955 in Olofström) graduated from the Royal Institute of Art in 1985. Her work has been presented in solo shows at The Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Enköpings konsthall, Sven-Harrys konstmuseum, Västerås Konstmuseum, Galerie Aronowitsch and Cecilia Hillström Gallery. Furthermore, Larsson has been engaged in several public commissions, e.g. Navet, Umeå, the Rinkeby Academy, Danderyd Hospital, The Royal Institute of Technology, and the Swedish Embassy in Santiago, Chile. She is represented in the collections of Moderna Museet, Public Art Agency Sweden, Stockholm Art Council, Lund University, Umeå University and Region Stockholm.
