Sonja Larsson, Carl Boutard and Elin Odentia – MARKET Art Fair: Liljevalchs konsthall, Stockholm

For MARKET Art Fair 2022, Cecilia Hillström Gallery is pleased to present a curated show with gallery artists from three different generations: Sonja Larsson (b. 1955), Carl Boutard (b. 1972) and Elin Odentia (b. 1990). For all artists, the play with micro and macro perspectives is important, constantly shifting in scale. With a firm base in the Modernist tradition, the presentation brings forth new visual contrasts and connections.

Following her acclaimed exhibition at the gallery in August 2020, the presentation will feature a new series of paintings by Sonja Larsson. Her large-scale works may be referred to as minimalistic, yet the time-consuming working process is characterized by a series of decisions based on intuition and feeling. The subtle expression of Larsson’s painting is guided by a combination of rules and a considerable element of surprise.

Carl Boutard’s new bronze sculptures are connected to a series of works shown in Boutard’s solo exhibition at Reykjavik Art Museum (2021-22) and at Skissernas museum – Museum of Artistic Process and Public Art (2021-22). For Carl Boutard, the relationship between man and nature is in focus. He is constantly collecting fragments and objects from nature as an important part of his day-to-day practice, creating a foundation for the sculptures to come. Seemingly unrelated parts are then combined when transformed into bronze or other materials.

Further, our presentation will feature new paintings by Elin Odentia, where she continues her exploration of the contradictions of representation and tangible materiality in her work. Odentia’s paintings are at first sight characterized by a delicate and subtle expression. Pastel hues and muted colours take geometric forms and shapes on the canvas devoid of brushstrokes and immediate traces of the painterly process. A tension is created through a balance between abstraction and figuration, an intensity which holds both resistance and seduction.
