Eva Vermandel – Splinter

Cecilia Hillström Gallery is pleased to present Eva Vermandel’s first solo exhibition in the Nordic region. Vermandel, born 1974 in Belgium, established herself as a much sought-after portrait photographer in London in the mid-90s. She set up her own art practice in 2004, creating several bodies of highly acclaimed photographic work. In her series Splinter, it becomes apparent that Eva Vermandel has an extraordinary eye for capturing moments of stillness, allowing her photographs to convey a feeling of timelessness. With an acute sense of composition and colour, she uses her camera as a skilled painter uses her devices, to an extent that the actual medium becomes irrelevant. Vermandel’s sensibility towards the subject matter catches the full phsychology of everyday preoccupations; the ongoing moments that constitute our lives.

In connection with the opening of the exhibition, the book Splinter is launched, published by Hatje Cantz Verlag. The accompanying essay is written by Duncan Forbes, previously the Senior Curator of Photography at the National Galleries of Scotland and now the Director of Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland.

Vermandel has been exhibiting her work in the UK, Belgium and Ireland. She is represented in the collections of Victoria & Albert Museum, London, National Portrait Gallery, London and National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh.
