André Nordström – To Infinity
We are pleased to present André Nordström’s first solo show at the gallery, To Infinity. A recent graduate of the Royal Institute of Art (MFA 2021), Nordström works in a variety of media in his installations.
In his MFA-exhibition End Game at the Royal Academy of Fine Art, Nordström created a panic room for the contemporary agnostic. The installation consisted of sculpture, drawing and sound, creating a refuge which rested solely on the soothing abilities of aesthetics. The drawings mounted in thick MDF-frames depicted idealised landscapes, like the wall paintings in the homes of the patricians in ancient Rome.
A keen observer of contemporary society, where status is manifested through desirable artefacts and designer objects, Nordström plays with the notion of the perfect life in his art. In his new gallery project, To Infinity, the drawings are installed as flat objects on the walls as well as on the floor. The Eames chairs and loudspeakers provide the prerequisite for the ultimate sound experience; at the same time, a young man is observing the horizon from an infinity pool. In the dreamy depiction of the perfect life, the surrounding sound of birds is fake. In this seemingly ideal world, where consumerism seems to have taken over our lives, André Nordström has created a fictional setting where the analogue is put in contrast to the digital – and where real birds have become quiet.
André Nordström (b. 1991 in Kristianstad) has received several awards and grants, e.g. Aase & Richard Björklund’s grant (2022) and Pontus Bonnier’s stipend (2021). He was one of the finalists in The Carlsberg Foundation’s Portrait Award (2019).
